Today is Tuesday and we are visiting 2 more schools. Robert, Frank and Aaron pick us up at about 9 and it is just a short drive to Mihayo Primary School. This is our first year supporting this school so our first visit to them. The school has 755 pupils and 15 teachers.
On arrival we are met by the Headteacher, the deputy Head and the English teacher. We are taken to the Headteacher’s office where we are soon joined by the ICT teacher and the Ward Education Officer.
We spend quite a bit of time explaining our project to them, going through the loan contract and explaining about sending good reports to us. We also discuss how they will use the computers and what their priorities should be.
We then go and look at the room they will use for the computers. It’s not huge but certainly big enough for the 3 computers and 1 printer we will be giving them today. Frank and Aaron then go and get the computers from the van which causes a lot of excitement among the children.
Frank and Aaron set up the computers while we visit some of the classrooms. The first class we visit is Pre-Primary which is for the youngest children, usually around 5 years of age. The teacher shows us that even at this age the curriculum states that the children should know what a computer is.
We then move on to the older children in Standard 5, 6 and 7. These classes are very large, up to 150 in Standard 7 but at least they can all sit at a desk. The children here are more enthusiastic about talking to us than in some other schools and the standard of English is better, may be to do with being in a town. All the children seem very happy that the school now has some computers.
By the time we get back to the computer room the computers are all set up.
The Headteacher and the Ward Education Officer then give us 2 large bottles of local honey to thank us for coming, which is very nice of them.
It is almost 12 and they offer us something eat. This turns out to be chicken and bananas. Pete and I think we will treat this as our lunch.
It’s now time to leave. It’s been a really good visit. The Headteacher and the Ward Education Officer seem very enthusiastic about the whole project. I think the Ward Education Officer may try and get more of his schools involved with our project.
It’s about a 20 minute drive to Mkoani Primary School which is the second school we are visiting today.
We have supported this school for the last 3 years and they now have 6 computers and a printer. Today we will be finishing our support to them and handing over all the equipment.
On arrival we are met by the Deputy Headteacher and Leah, the teacher who sends the ICT reports. The Headteacher will join us later. We go to the computer room where 2 members of the School Committee also join us. We have a chat with the teachers and then do the paperwork signing the computers over to the school. They then give us some sodas and some snacks….we definitely don’t need anything else for lunch now!!
We say our goodbyes and are told we are welcome to call in anytime in the future if we are passing.
Frank drops us back at the hotel and we arrange to meet up again around 5pm. We spend some time sorting out photos, doing this blog and packing as tomorrow we are leaving Tabora and driving to Dodoma.
This evening we go out for dinner with Robert and Frank. We try out a new restaurant near Tabora Airport. It’s actually very nice. It’s quiet and does good food. While we are there Frank introduces me to a new drink! It’s our last night in Tabora and it’s been a lovely evening, a fitting end to a really great stay here.
